Broker website to invest in US stocks while in Japan for someone who is neither Japanese nor American

Main Post:

Hi everybody,

I'm european, living in Japan. I used to live in the US, where I used E-trade to buy/manage stocks, and really liked it. Now that I'm starting to have money again, I'm looking for something similar here.

Some specifics:

  • My income is completely in yen
  • I would like to invest mostly in US stocks
  • I don't have a US address or bank account
  • I have a Japanese address/job/bank account (Shinsei, debit card only)
  • I don't have an address in my home country, I have a bank account with a pretty limited Mastercard card
  • My Japanese level is okay, but I would feel more confortable with an English UI if possible
  • As low fees as possible, obviously

I am considering using Etrade again, but:

  • I'm guessing it's better using something locally than "fighting the system"
  • Not sure if I can safely transfer money to them, and most importantly, get it back
  • If something were to happen to me, I don't want my fiancee/family to be left with nothing while all my money is on some website across the world.

What websites/services have you guys used? Any recommendations?

Interactive Brokers, IBLLC type account.

Good online broker websites?

Main Post:

Hey, i’m from Norway and looking for a european online broker platform that is reliable and offers low costs for buying ETF’s (not yearly cost) and that will report taxes for me in my country if that’s possible. Does anyone have any good suggestions? :)

The largest one in scandinavia almost holds a monopoly and it has fairly non competative pricing on buying stocks outside of scandinavia and EU, around 8 dollars cost per buy and sale of an ETF seems unreasonable to me but tell me if thats the standard or not.

Thanks for any advice :D!

Top Comment: There are literally Interactive Brokers ads all over Reddit. Their Ireland branch should cover your area.

Best Brokerage for Beginners?

Main Post:

Looking to get into day trading with some long-term trading. I know that TD A/Schwab, Fidelity, Vanguard, Interactive Brokers are some of the best, especially for beginners. Not into TD A just because they don't allow fractional shares. So out of Fidelity, Vanguard, Interactive which would you prefer?

Prefer a nice UI, fractional shares, low fees, etc.

Top Comment: You can't go wrong with Vanguard, Fidelity, or Schwab. Vanguard has the added benefit of a clunky interface that will make is nearly impossible for you to make an impulsive decision.

Good European Stock Broker websites?

Main Post:

I want to start investing into stocks I've been researching it on and off for years now, but I never took the plunge.

I'm from Lithuania and from personal experience I know that some online options are unavailable to me.

I want to start off small to test the waters, and I don't know what website/app I should start with.

The options I've found promising so far are: "Etero" (mensioned almost everywhere) "Alpaca traiding" (broker chooser website) "TradeStation" (broker chooser website)

Been reading that Etero has been getting alot of problems this year after some sort of "big update"

Cant seem to find any websites explaining the pros and cons of each broker, so i wanted to ask here.

I would be most grateful for any advice. Thanks in advance.

Top Comment: Avoid all those “promising” options. Your best choice is Interactive Brokers (but make sure that you get an account in Ireland, not Hungary). Most of lithuanians that I know use Interactive Brokers, etoro is a casino compared to them.

Best brokerage 2024 edition

Main Post:

I know it's been asked before, but I'm looking for an updated version. What's the best brokerage for 2024?

For reference, I've been with ScottTrade, TD Ameritrade, and Schwab - all without ever changing my account. 😁 I do relatively basic investing: mutual funds, ETFs, and single stocks, and I avoid the more complex things like margins and shorting.

I really liked TD Ameritrade's platform and how I could easily view my portfolio balance in different ways, like what industries I'm in, and % for each. The Schwab platform has just felt flat by comparison.

Top Comment: I like Vangaurd because the interface is so clunky it makes me hardly want to use it, thereby preventing me from being trader instead of an investor.

What do y’all consider to be the best broker ?

Main Post:

Want to transfer my Robinhood funds to a more reputable company. I currently have a Roth with Vanguard but am looking to move my brokerage funds to either Schwab or fidelity. Do you all have a preference? Im open to other companies as well. Thanks.

What is the best Brokerage account?

Main Post:

I’m looking for advice on where to move my stock holdings. I have a long term account with vanguard it holds equities that I want to hold for years. I also have an account with E*Trade for trading.

I want a brokerage that will not lend my shares, that doesn’t employ pfof, could allow me to buy from which exchange I choose (preferably IEX) and is fundamentally sound.

Is there such a place? Is it Schwab? Fidelity?

Top Comment: I think there are a lot of things to consider. I’ve heard that Fidelity gets good fills on orders I’ve heard WeBull has a good options platform I’ve heard that IBKR is good for international users I’ve heard Robinhood feels the best when deleting the app

Which online broker is the best

Main Post:

Dear PF community, what in you opinion is the best brokerage service online.

I have Fidelity and Robinhood accounts currently. I find Robinhood’s app user friendly feature rich and easier to navigate and Fidelity more trustworthy platform. I follow the stocks on Robinhood and trade on fidelity :) I don’t want to get bogged down by having so many different brokerage accounts and then not able to manage them efficiently, but also don’t want to miss on the opportunity on other brokerage accounts like TD Ameritrade, Charles Schwab, Vanguard and their likes.

What in your opinion is the best brokerage firm, based on the following criteria’s:

  1. Easy of use platforms, online, in-person, phone app.
  2. Fees structure, transparency.
  3. Trustworthiness.
  4. Support when it comes to personal advising, I don’t have a big portfolio but would like to grow it steadily without manually intervening every month or week. Set it to automatically per a plan and forget it.

Thanks !

Top Comment: Fidelity, Schwab, Vanguard are, for all intents and purposes, the same. I'm sure there may be edge cases related to investing partial dollar amounts in ETFs or mutual funds or the tax treatments for some of vanguard's etfs, or whatever...but I'm really not aware of any material differences.

What brokerage do you use and why?

Main Post:

Each year, I try to take a look at brokerage accounts, bank accounts, and credit card accounts to see if there is a better option I could be using. I am pretty content with capital one for my bank accounts, chase for my credit cards, but I switched to Robinhood a few years back from Etrade because at the time they were the only company you could set up DCA automated recurring buys of partial stock shares of individual companies. I have since realized Robinhood is a pretty basic platform lacking research tools and deep tax info.

What platform do you use and why?

Top Comment: Charles Schwab because they bought the brokerage that bought the brokerage that let me start an account as a minor.
